Six New Drawing Challenges Just Landed in The Midnight Gallery
Color Shrink, Selected Colors, Beautiful Mistake, One Shot, Minimalist, Big Brush — six new daily challenge modes that turn a single sketch into a real game.
The daily theme has always been the heart of The Midnight Gallery — one prompt, one drawing, no retries. This update adds something on top: six new challenge modes that change the rules of how you draw. Same prompt for everyone, but with a twist that forces you to think differently.
Tap anywhere to start. Accept the challenge or skip it. If you accept, the rules are locked in for that day's drawing. Here's what each mode does.
1. Color Shrink — pick wisely
Every time you switch colors after drawing, the previous color disappears from your palette forever. Undo, redo and erase are all disabled. By the end you may be down to your last colour — and that's the point. Forces commitment to a palette plan from stroke one.
2. Selected Colors Only — work the constraint
Only a curated set of colors is available for the day. Make the best of what you're given. Great for breaking out of your default palette habits.
3. Beautiful Mistake — no undo, but you can wipe
No undo, no go-back. Every stroke is permanent — but you can always erase everything and start again. Embrace the happy accidents.
4. One Shot — total commitment
No undo, no go-back, no eraser. Every stroke is final. Total commitment, zero safety net. The purest version of the Midnight Gallery philosophy.
5. Minimalist — limited strokes
You only get a fixed number of strokes. Make them count. Undo restores a slot — but choose wisely. This is the mode that teaches economy of line faster than anything else.
6. Big Brush — only wide strokes
Only the XL brush is available. No fine detail, only big expressive shapes. Forces you to see the drawing as composition first, detail never.
How to play
- Open today's theme as usual.
- Tap anywhere to start — the challenge appears.
- Accept to play with the rule, or skip to draw normally.
- Your challenge run publishes to the gallery alongside everyone else's.
Why constraints make better drawings
Each mode kills a specific kind of perfectionism. Color Shrink kills palette indecision. One Shot kills stroke anxiety. Minimalist kills over-rendering. Big Brush kills the temptation to fix a bad composition with detail. After a week of challenge modes, most artists report drawing faster and more confidently even on un-challenged days.
Pair the new modes with the prompts from our popular drawing challenges guide for a tighter daily session. The combination — a fixed prompt plus a constraint — is the sweet spot for daily drawing.
